HILLARY MISHCON

"McGee Island Cook House"
This painting, finished in 2024, captures a quiet afternoon scene of the kitchen (or cook house) on McGee Island off the coast of Maine. Through the window and open door you can see the view of rocky coastline leading out to the ocean. Inside, a tired lab slumbers on the floor, exhausted from a morning of play.
Small details in the painting give more hints to the location and the occupants here. If you look closely at the larger open book on the table, you can see a map of the state of Maine and the state name slightly obscured at the corner. The astute viewer may also be able to identify the other book on the table as the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds," which, along with the binoculars, are my own small memorial to my Uncle, who loved both Maine and bird watching.
