HILLARY MISHCON

About the Artist
Growing up, I made frequent trips to mid-coast Maine with my family. The landscape, artists/artworks I have come to know there continue to be one of the most prominent influences on my work. I received my BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2009 with a concentration in painting. I spent years working at Mass MoCA out in western Massachusetts. I spent a few years living out in Oregon and exploring the US before eventually moving to Maine and starting a new career as a pharmacist. I love my work in the healthcare field but painting remains an important part of my life.
It has always been a way for me to escape into my own world and explore my experiences. I enjoy exploring different styles but often find that paintings have their own way of dictating how they turn out. Sometimes it's just a way for me to spend time in places or with subjects I enjoy.

Selected Paintings
"McGee Island Cook House"
This painting, finished in 2024, captures a quiet afternoon scene of the kitchen (or cook house) on McGee Island off the coast of Maine. Through the window and open door you can see the view of rocky coastline leading out to the ocean. Inside, a tired lab slumbers on the floor, exhausted from a morning of play.Small details in the painting give more hints to the location and the occupants here. If you look closely at the larger open book on the table, you can see a map of the state of Maine and the state name slightly obscured at the corner. The astute viewer may also be able to identify the other book on the table as the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds," which, along with the binoculars, are my own small memorial to my Uncle, who loved both Maine and bird watching.

"Blue Bedroom"
"Blue Bedroom" depicts a room from Saltwater Farmhouse in Martinsville, Maine. My family rented the house for a week during the summer for a few years to host big family reunions. The house became special enough to my family that my cousin ended up getting married there. I loved that each bedroom was decorated in it's own color scheme. The blue bedroom, in particular, always felt particularly inviting. The cool, crips sheets and stuffed duvet were the perfect respite after spending a hot summer day outside.

"Kitchen"
This oil painting shows a cozy corner of my kitchen. The kitchen always seems to be the place where family and guests gather. It's a place where both form and function meet. Some days my kitchen feels more chaotic than anything else. Taking the time to do this painting helped me remember that my kitchen can be cozy and welcoming, even when the dishes are piling up.
