HILLARY MISHCON

"Entryway"
This painting was my final project in art school. It's probably five feet tall and over three feet wide. At the time, I was exploring painting as a process and had purchased pigments and was grinding my own paints with linseed oil. I used MDF board as my base to try to achieve as smooth a finish as possible, without the tooth of canvas. This painting is very much about shifts in light through a space and using strong saturated colors to show those changes in light.
I love creating an inviting space that welcomes the viewer into the warm kitchen after being outside in the rain (implied from the umbrella and raincoat hanging up). I've also included a nod to Maine and the Wyeth family of artists by depicting the cover of "Wondrous Strange", a collection of their works, into my own painting.
Because of its size, I have not had it professionally scanned in order to produce prints, so it languishes away in the back of the closet at my parents' house, along with most of my other college era works.
